These beautiful geckos are one of the best geckos for those who have never kept reptiles. They do better with cooler temperatures than many other reptiles, and are nocturnal, so they don't require UV. They are fairly easy to care for and tolerate handling.

www.lickyoureyeballs.com Natural History
Crested geckos were thought to be extinct until 1994, when several specimens were discovered after a tropical storm. They are native to New Caledonia.
www.lickyoureyeballs.com General Care
They do well in vertically oriented enclosures. Include broad leaved plants and horizontal branches in their tank. For substrate I like to use a mix of soil (with NO fertilizers) and orchid bark. This holds humidity well, but doesn't get soggy. Mist tank daily to maintain a relative humidity of about 70 % and because they tend to drink from the water droplets on the glass and leaves.
www.lickyoureyeballs.com Temperature
Crested geckos should ideally be kept between 78 - 82 F. A small red or black heat light should be kept on them, unless their ambient temperature is staying warm enough. Make sure to keep an eye on the temperatures for the entire cage for the first few weeks so they don't overheat.
www.lickyoureyeballs.com Feeding
They are insectivorous and frugivorous. They readily consume crickets, roaches, pureed tropical fruits and Repashy diet. Fruits can include bananas, mango and berries. The general rule with feeding lizards is to feed them insects that fit between their eyes and all uneaten food should be removed from the enclosure. Babies should be fed daily to every other day. Adults can be fed every other day. All food should be dusted with a 50/50 mix of calcium and vitamins.
